Amy Howley Reifert Earns 450th Career Win as UChicago Women's Soccer Defeats Macalester
The third-ranked University of Chicago women's soccer team remained undefeated on the season on Friday with a 3-1 victory over Macalester. The victory was Head Coach Amy Howley Reifert's 450th career win, making her the 21st coach in NCAA history to reach 450 career wins. She also ranks sixth all-time in NCAA Division III victories.
The Maroons wasted no time jumping on the Scots in the early going, taking four shots in the first 10 minutes of action, and they got on the board in the 10th minute as Kamiryn Braxton Grimes slotted one past the keeper on a beautiful passing sequence from Kaitlyn Gomez and Lucy Harrison-Caldwell.
The Scots bounced right back in the 19th minute with their best scoring chance of the opening 45 minutes. Amanda Kayari made a beautiful save to tip the first shot off the crossbar. On the rebound, the Scots put the second shot off the post, the third shot was blocked away, and the fourth shot was grabbed by Kayari for her second save in five seconds.
After a scoreless remainder of the first half, UChicago came out of the halftime break with a flurry of chances, just as they did on Tuesday. Indira Naylor found the back of the net for the second time this season on a pair of assists from Ella Cho and Harrison-Caldwell to double the lead in the 51st minute.
In the 70th minute, the Macalester Scots grabbed one back in the 70th minute after a giveaway by the UChicago defense, but the Maroons responded immediately to seal the victory. In the 74th minute, Annabel Edwards struck a free kick directly into the wall and found the rebound back onto her left foot, where she found the upper 90 to put the Maroons in front 3-1.
Then, just 66 seconds later, UChicago scored for the fourth time of the game when Naylor whipped a corner kick into the six-yard box and found the head of Kaitlyn Gomez, who finished the cross for her first goal of the season.
With the win, the Maroons improve to 2-0 on the season.
